Highpoint Aviation’s Jim Dolly and prolific soaring writer/photographer Dave Garwood have teamed up for a long feature artice and series of great pictures capturing aerotowing at the beautiful Highpoint site just outside of Cumberland, Maryland. Their article is featured in the January 2012 edition of Radio Controlled Soaring Digest (RCSD). RCSD is now in it’s 29th year of publication and is available these days online as a free pdf download.

The Highpoint field is located on the top of Knobley Mountain in Short Gap, WV. Soaring and model aircraft flying have been occuring at this site for at least 45 years. Many have completed their LSF Level Five 8-hour flight at this site. A minimum of two large annual soaring events are held at this amazing site, one in the spring and the other in the fall. Of course, if one is lucky enough to live nearby, club flying occurs on top of Old Knobley whenever the conditions are favorable. (Yes, we are very jealous of that fact.) The annual “Cumberland Soar For Fun” in early November has attracted flyers from all across America and also visitors from foreign countries. To fly at Highpoint and to spend time with the good people there is to enjoy one of the truly fufilling experiences in our hobby!
In addition to giving a plug to our friends Jim and Dave, this is also an opportune time to mention Remote Controlled Soaring Digest — or RCSD for short. Bill & Bunny Kuhlman have been publishing this gem for 29 years. RCSD survives on reader contributions and also reader donations. Each month there is a range of soaring articles and in the course of a year literally every aspect and small niche of the soaring hobby gets attention. I start clicking their site link at the end of each month wishing, waiting and hoping for the new edition to appear. They never disappoint!
Here’s how RCSD describes themselves: RCSD is a reader-written monthly publication for the R/C sailplane enthusiast and has been published since January 1984. It is dedicated to sharing technical and educational information. All material contributed must be original and not infringe upon the copyrights of others. It is the policy of RCSD to provide accurate information. Please let us know of any error that significantly affects the meaning of a story. Because we encourage new ideas, the content of each article is the opinion of the author and may not necessarily reflect those of RCSD.
