Dave Darr, one of RCAeroTowing.com’s co-founders, has been continually out on the campaign trail preaching the scale soaring gospel. Doing what he does best, Dave has been running around the middle part of the United States attending various AMA club meetings and giving presentations on how to get started in aerotowing.
Dave contacts the leadership within each club and offers to show up at their next monthly meeting and make an informative and entertaining presentation on the grace and joy of a sailplane behind a tow plane. More of that gospel stuff.
Along with the recommended beginner setup of an EZ Glider Pro paired with a Hobby Lobby Telemaster 40, Dave also brings along a 5-meter Ventus and a vintage scale 3.5m Kranic. Bringing a range of sailplanes from beginner to advanced allows members to see both ends of the spectrum.
This most recent trip was to Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley RC Club. The 35 members in attendance were treated to a well-conceived PowerPoint presentation, a hands on demonstration of how the tow release mechanisms work and a “how-to” on constructing tow-lines.
The evening’s presentation ends with handouts for each person including an invitation to come out and try aerotowing with the EZ glider and Telemaster.
Dave reports that since this program has been implemented, countless individuals have taken the “bait” and stopped by the field to give it a try. Dave easily surpassed his 2011 personal goal of introducing 50 new people to scale soaring and towing. With scale soaring becoming more and more popular across the globe, its the perfect time for clubs to introduce this discipline to their members. Since you need to have a tow pilot, what better way to increase club unity and spark teamwork.
