I was looking through my copy, of one of Peter Riedels, vintage soaring books and saw a diagram, showing an aerotow set up from the late 20's or early 30's. The towline on the tug was attached not on the tail but up on the wing. The tug in the diagram was a "parasol" type aircraft. There is also a photo of Ernst Udets Flamingo bi-plane, that shows the aerotow connection coming off the upper wing above the cockpit.

Guys,

The Clearview Field near Wichita KS is pleased to announce The 4th Annual Mickey Sullivan Memorial Aero-Tow. The Dates for this Aero-Tow are August 22nd thru 25th 2013. The field is located about 35 miles SW of Wichita and it has a 750 ft x 150 ft mowed grass runway. I have attached a wide angle view of the field. The owner, Ken Stitt visited the JR Aerotow a few summers ago and decided he needed to have gliders flying at his field and asked if I would help schedule an Aerotow for him. He holds several large events at his field each year and has just a tremendous set up for a big event.

I currently have Jim Frickey and Tim Gastinger signed up to help with towing and would welcome any one else who would like to volunteer to bring a tow plane. Jim and Tim can tow pretty much anything you might bring to fly.

The facilites available are a large air conditioned club house, a large secure storage area where your gliders could be left assembled for the entire weekend, and a play area for kids if you bring them. There are also a limited number of camper Hook-ups available on a first come basis.

The entry fee for the Event is $45.00 for all four days and will include a Very Nice Meal on Saturday Night. Food provided on site daily for $5.00/meal. We have on-line registration available RCAerotowing Site under the events section. You can also email your entry to pmccleave@cox.net and can then pay when you arrive at the site.

Ken Stitt and his wife Kim are truly gracious hosts and would love to see a great turn-out. Here is a link to the Clearview Field Website. http://www.clearviewfield.com/

Last year we had a good turnout and all those that attended said they had a great time and asked for us to do it all again. This year's event looks to be even bigger and better. I hope you all can attend.

You are welcome to ship models in to the event and we will be happy to help with getting them shipped back out after the event. Email me directly to arrange for this.

Thank you,

I shall much appreciate having information about that model - Is it for thermal only or also can do the basic aerobatic like loop, roll etc. How is the quality and what is the flying behaviour.

Hello,

Below are few photos I like to share from the past weekend - Juchen-Wey, Germany (June 15-16, 2013); an Aerotow put on by HKM Modellbau (http://www.hkm-modellbau.de/).

I heard that Friday afternoon was great, Saturday flying was a bit tricky with winds gusting beyond 32 km/hr with some rain; however, Sunday was a dream and worth waiting for. If I'm not mistaken 52 pilots registered for the event and proved sufficient excitement for all.

The beer (almost flowing), water and pop drinks were readily available and so was BBQ (steaks and bratwursts) with bread, salad and deserts. Saturday night the music and entertainment continued well into the later hours...

Enjoy,

Super Decathlon 100cc ARF by Hangar 9 ~ Horizon Hobby

As we anxiously await the delivery of a very large box, the other items needed to finish the Decathlon are being gathered together.

The engine will be the DA-120 with the DA compact can mufflers. While looking at the engine on the Chief Aircraft site, we checked out the Hitec servo options and settled on the HS-7955TG servos for the control surfaces. Chief Aircraft also has some really nice anodized aluminum servo arms that are the recommended sizes for the Decathlon. UPS tracking says we should have those items this week, so we will be able to start assembly immediately upon receiving the plane.

We ordered a tow release mechanism from ICare...the same one used with great success on our TopModel Porter.

Batteries will be NoBS Batteries 4,000mAh NiMH packs for ignition and radio. One 4-cell ignition pack and two 5-cell receiver packs. We will use a redundant receiver setup like that in our Porters. While the servos in this model are more powerful (and will draw more current), there are only 8 servos total verses 11 in the Porter. Each receiver will handle just 4 servos.

Looks like several others will be building the Decathlon at the same time, so we should be able to compare notes an see how each of us decide to proceed through the process.

I just received a copy of Martin Simons' book "The World's Vintage Sailplanes 1908-45". Found it through Amazon at a reasonable price (read about $125 plus shipping).

This is a really great reference. It has quite a collection of sailplanes with photographs and descriptive information on each of about 1-2 pages each plus several pages of color pictures at various intervals throughout the text.

While the information isn't extensive, it is quite helpful. There are also small 3 view drawings for each of the sailplanes documented.

Great resource and also wonderful to look at and dream about other vintage sailplanes that may be in my future.

I attached two pdf files, one of the cover and the other of the information on the Orlik to give an idea of what is contained in the book.
Edited this as I thought it would be helpful to have the contents page for reference in case anyone is looking for a specific sailplane. Bob

When I heard a few weeks ago that they found one still intact in the English Channel and were about to raise it...I was excited. There are none left intact anywhere in the world.....and after seeing what it looked like when they raised it....I would say there still are none intact :)
