So what happened in the machine shop? Was a hydraulic press involved? Did the 7075 just flex under load then pop back to straight?

dumbass???
I know you're busy, but how about elaborating for those of us who lack your vision.
I just checked with Oakwood Veneer Co.and they say that all of their wood veneers have a wood thickness of 1/42" thick. So the wood is 23 mils.

You've got the steady hand on the camera. I built a rifle stock and handle for my camera and STILL it was shaky.

There are certainly as least a couple of questions regarding adding carbon. There's the cost, the fuss and the mess.
Carbon Tow:
Not only does carbon cost more than wood, but it means lots of...
I think that you guys are really on to some thing here with this quickly built spar. The entire wing construction method is quick and easy. Very attractive.
What are your thoughts on adding...
You're a little too sensitive for my tastes Tom. I never attacked you.
Your comment:
seemed a little defensive to me. I never made a comment to suggest you "don't know much". That's all you...
Dave,
Previously we were discussing upgrading the carbon fiber joiner to Stressproof or tool steel. That discussion occurred, at least for me, before spar was fully understood. I would think...
It's not an attack Tom, just an different opinion. You can handle a different opinion can't you???? No need to defend yourself.
I disagree with your statement "general consensus...
This spar is fine.
Even if the box spar were only 3 feet long, it has an adequate connection to obechi skins through the foam. Would it be better to have the spar directly connected to the...
Dave,
So the spar is simply a plywood box beam? I can see the carbon wrap at the joiner, but there is no carbon any where else?

OK, so the tapered spar box actually fit snug into the core. So when you put the vacuum to it, there was no squashing of the airfoil. Nicely done.
Kent
I does, thanks.
That's what I thought you did. Clever ! I can see how the expanding glue would fill in the gap between the spar box and the square hole in the foam core. There must be a sizable...
Dave,
OK, it's taken a while for me to notice, but......
You have a hole in the foam core for the spar. This is nice inasmuch as it maintains the airfoil over the spar. This requires that...
There's some thing to be said for flexibility. If all of the structural elements flex a bit, the loads get absorbed, which lessens the total load. Also, when the wings are pointing up at a 45...
Thanks for you 2 cents Mark. Maybe you could add a nickel or two more.
At the risk of gettng off on a tow release tangent, I must say that I'm a little surprised at this. When I posted a 8 lb....
I haven't used 7075 yet, but it looks like the perfect joiner material, except for maybe the thinnest of wings. Even then, rectangular bar stock could fill the bill. It certainly kicks mild steel's...
The video proves it. Looks good.
I just finished my first tow release for a 5 lb. glider and tested it by hanging weight equal to the weight of the glider ( 8lbs. actually ) and then hit the...
I would think that you could carve out the center at the red line without loosing too much strength.

Sure Don, let me elaborate. Of course this about the airfoil. I built the SkyBench kit. It does not match the Thacker plans in many respects. Maybe SkyBench changed the airfoil too. My comments...
Mighty hot out there today. Many long thermal flights but no sloping today, at least not by 4pm. Here's video.

Nice work Petr. I'm convinced. Chuck is the real deal. That provides quite a few leads.
Thanks,

Martini: Please, prove my hunch wrong. I hope he is the real thing. If he is, he certainly will have a bunch of original shop drawings of this great vintage ship. It does hurt to ask. If he...
This is the same plan as is supplied in the Sky Bench kit. It is readlily available from online plans service. This plan does not have accurate rib layout at the ailerons among other problems.

Although I'm a scratch builder, I built the Sky Bench kit, as shown in my avatar. Long story short. It is the worst kit ever. It would have been easier to build from scratch than to suffer through...
