I would assume the reasoning behind balancing them with the wings off is just because of the size.....not many people have a large enough workshop to assemble a plane this large to balance it with...

If you can get a V-Nose that's the way to go.....more storage and they pull better....
Back in the early days of Aerotowing we always use to use these....called them "Hookers" :) Made from a section of broom handle with a hook screwed in the end.....when the tug came by the flight line...

Dave, did you pressure test that joint? Looks like you didn't get very good penetration with the rod in spots......you don't want leaks.
