Towing WILL take place at Salem tomorrow ( Monday, July 4th ) We did not go to the field either, instead we spent the entire day in the shop until 11 pm working on the new Decathlon. It will have its maiden flight tomorrow at Salem. Come on up Steve, its worth it. You just have to leave at 3 to beat the traffic.

Anyone is welcome at the field.

Flying this weekend in Salem was very good. No major disasters, good weather and great friends. Don Chamberland took ownership of my Fox, and preceded to fly the heck out of it. Don has come along very well with sailplanes in a short time, he's quite talented. Steve, Bob and Tom kept me and Rob towing all day. I went back on today and put on a few demonstrations for a very large crowd.

    The tugs are doing well.

Some wind and new toys makes for a good day of flying! Conio had purchased at the WRAM show temerity equipment to be used with a smart phone that we tested out today. We towed his Easy Glider with the FunCub to 700' and within a few minutes of release he was at 1200'! After that flight we had four e-gliders flying ALES (using the Cam unit with motor cut-off set at 150 meters). Lots of lift even with the wind!

This is an interesting unit. It seems to work great but the iPhone program needs some work. It reports sensors periodically and you can set the period. It has several alarms like low receiver pack voltage. I think in 6 months it is going to be great. It is missing one critical sensor. When your easyglider goes to 1200 feet you really need a heart rate monitor with an alarm

One of our club member's asked if there was a tow plane available for a maiden of his newest construction project. He said it was a 2 meter gull wing light sailplane that he has been building from a kit. We checked it all out today and put it behind a Fun Cub for its maiden! Peter M. took these pictures with his son on his arm! The plane flew great! Congrats to Bernd for a fine build and flying sailplane.

    Roger,

That is fantastic! Keep up the good work...neat sailplane, looks like the builder did himself proud!

Thinking out loud here...it seems to me that the retro planes actually make great first or second towable sailplanes. Dave's Kranich surprised me with its easy flight characterisitcs. Unlike the small (2.0-2.5m) modern sailplanes (ASW-28 for example), the retro designs seem to have stability much like an Easy Glider.

This looks to me like the answer to question: "Where should a beginner start who wants to get into scale on a budget and work his way up."

I think you are right regarding the retro planes..... I do not have the specs on this plane but, I would bet that the wing loading is much lighter that the Easy Glider and it flew very well for the first flight! Another point is the size makes it easy to transport and fly at local sites.
