    Vintage wood is the BEST! But....every now and then a plastic missile can be quite enjoyable!

    Alright.....I'm on a screw up binge here as of late...I have used Kevlar for hinges in a bunch of bagged wings and have always put them in on the 45 bias.....these?
    Not so much....for some reason I cut them out with the weave running 90 degrees to the hinge line.....how does that work?
    NOT SO GOOD!
    Worked them back and forth a few times and BAM....the thing breaks off in my hand...damn.
    So I had to dig them out....suffice to say....I glued them in NOT to come out...

    Here's what's left of the screw up and the new pile of 45 bias hinges....



    Much better!



    Bottom side...you can see where I was digging for buried treasure....
    I also put some 1/32" spacers in to fill in the gap left over from my digging expedition!




    All glued up again and will attach the elevators tomorrow....I also painted the spoilers RED like all the cool kids do!
    Vintage wood is the BEST! But....every now and then a plastic missile can be quite enjoyable!

    Here is the picture of the "Cool Kid" red spoiler blades.....Oooooo....Ahhhhhhhh...



    Next up I cut some strips of real hard balsa to cap the spoilers with....mixed up some thickened epoxy and stuck them down.....
    While sanding everything smooth the next day I decided to go over the top of the whole wing and smooth the surface out...everything was going along peachy and then I started to look at the leading edge.....the leading edge on the wings are epoxy/fiberglass splodge that is put in under the skins and then the whole she-bang is bagged....well....who ever did the final sanding and shaping of the LE must have done it the same time as they cut out the ailerons......the LE just didn't look right....way to "flat"
    I went up to my office and printed out some leading edge templates in Compufoil and took them down to see just how far off everything was....

    The right wing wasn't that bad.....



    But the left....Holy Filler Batman!!



    The gap is about 3/16" - 1/4" in spots!!

    So the plan is to use some yyz "approved" blue tape....tape off the leading edge.....prop the wing up on the trailing edge.....mix up some really thick splodge and using the leading edge template as a forming tool....... "build" the LE out to where it needs to be.

    It might need a couple of coats to get it where it's correct. Just when I thought I was close to the end.....3 steps backwards....Ohhh the joy of model building!!

    Once I fix the LE I need to box out the rest of the servo holes in the wing....put the mono blocks in.....finish up some cockpit stuff then covering and paint!!

    Dude, those aren't even close! I would be the opposite of happy....

    I was hoping Working-on-the-Concordia Chris would comment on how the full-size boys do their profiling. If I'm not mistaken, I think they fill under the template from both sides, let that dry, remove the templates and then "bridge" the spanwise-gaps between what the template deals left behind with light filler and use the template marks as a sanding reference.

    There's carbon wrap in there somewhere but that's left as an exercise for the reader.

    The other problem I have with the LE is the wing uses a "blended" section....so root is E68, at the aileron joint it goes to E67, and the tip joint is E66. So....another thought I had was to take some foam and cut a "female" form of the LE to about 1/2" back....line that with packing tape...and use that as my form to mold the new LE....Hmmmmm...I need to ponder on this for a couple of days.

    I had also heard from a couple of people that have flown this same Duo from Mueller that said the airfoil combo on the plane isn't the best....but I wonder if it's just because the LE is so "blunted" that performance is down graded because of that.... we shall see!

    Cool! Tis way better to try fixing things without digging inside the structure.....
    And....as a matter of fact the trim on the Duo is going to be red....the bottom of the wings are going to be red and I'll get Callie to cut all the markings in the same red color and the nose will be painted the same.

    Yo- Tom... How 'bout this? Cut the LE off nice and square. Sand flat. Spot glue 1/16 sheet onto this flat. Spot glue new LE blank. Sand to profile. Pop the LE off. Remove the 1/16" sheet facing. Put LE back on, centered (it'll be just shy of edges of wing), and glass to fair into wing. The 1/16" allows the new LE to be slightly undersized- which the new glass will fill.
