    New England slopes

Anyone knows of good slopes in New England? I know people fly at the Cape but is there a good hill out there somewhere? Don't take me wrong I enjoy aerotowing very much but it could be fun to toss a plane off some cliff once awaile

There are places all over cape cod. Back in the twentys I think, they flew full scale gliders up in Truro . I have flown out back of the Seascape motel years ago . Back then it was RC friendly .

    Josh,

I plan to take a ride to the Cape next year. I should be fun to fly over there.

Any desire/interest in trying to organize a slope outing to Cape Cod? I don't know where the available slope sites are, but I would like to try it before the season closes. Does it really ever close on the Cape, or is that just something us in-landers deal with?

I flew at White Crest Beach in Wellfleet this summer, needs to be blowing from the E for best winds (think Nor'easter), but I had NE winds about 6mph and was plenty for my little 780mm Skysurfer. Launched off the beach (folding prop, motor) and was up over the top ridge easy lift for a good flight. We rode our mtbikes to the beach and this sailplane fit on the back.

Up top the parking lot was full but could be an ok landing zone, just need no cars. I did check with parking crew staff and life guards prior, all ok. They are employed by the town of Wellfleet and the town leases the beach area from the NPS.

On a good day of E winds over 14mph there would be serious lift as the cliff reminds me of SoCal, huge.

The other sweet spot is Duck Harbor on the bay side in Wellfleet. But this is protected nesting area for the Plover. I'll post up a video of White crest beach.

Stew, Don and I talked about going to there this fall, we just need to find a good weekend to do it.

It's not complicated, bigger is better.

The SKSS guys for years have made the trip each October
Terry and Dave just got back and reported great slope lift
They also love the food there
The Seascape is very R/C friendly

There are threads over at the other site for the Oct event

Let's try to organize for a weekend in November after Cumberland. Saturdays are better than Sundays for me, but don't let that steer the boat. The calendar would say, 10-11 or 17-18 I guess. Any preference by interested parties?

I just put my Eurocamper away for the winter, but that wouldn't stop my wife and I making another trip to the Cape - we LOVE it there, especially Wellfleet.

I'd suggest bringing light sailplanes from your hanger, think foam 2 meter or smaller. Really depends on how strong it's blowing. A perfect scale sailplane would be the ST Model DG-1000 with the klapptriebwerk SLS unit. Or another scale unit, the ST Model ASW-28 which is even better but not as scale. These both excel in slope winds and no need to be afraid to go over the water with the SLS unit or the folding Graupner, hang a camera on to search for great white sharks at the same time!

What I really want to fly there is my 1:10 scale 1,4m ASK-13 I'm building, don't think it will be finished though.

Scale ships over 3m might have a tough time landing on the top parking lot, but plenty of room on the beach. Warning, the walk back up is big and steep and sandy, no steps. Although, only for the brave, one could possibly aerotow from the beach and then stay up until battery levels go off. Just make sure you have buggy sand tires on the tow plane!

Here is a video my wife took with my iPhone, thats all we had as it was a mt biking day to the beach with my 780mm sailplane strapped to the back. I wish the iPhone could zoom while you were filming. Oh well, at least you'll get an idea of how SoCal looking the cliff is.

White Crest beach landing zone is limited up top to the tarmac parking lot which would mean... spoilers, flaps, the whole lot or ground effects and just keep flying! I didn't feel comfortable with climbing around the erosion riddled top surface and shrubs to chuck it off from. Decided to launch from the beach after checking with authorities first.

I did communicate with some locals in the RC club (other site) and they fly out of Brewster area on the bay side at a marsh flat area. He was welcomed to hear of my good fortune and news flying at White Crest Beach.

    Cheers, Thompson
